Ms. Thunderhead

Her gilt, gold, organic edges stood out sharply as my eye traveled up, up, way higher than the new, thin airplane trail passing her

Powerful, deadly, awesome in size as the lower clouds shoved her fluffy, white height into the atmosphere with all their strength, and while toiling, they shed tears into the blue evening shades, while the setting sun continued to smolder off the edges of her hefty frame

(From an enormous thunderhead sighting on October 22, 2014)

Tempest Temper

We, like the birds outside, huddle inside, while a

severe thunderstorm swoops down at nightfall

with heavy rain, flood warnings, high wind gusts

lightning exploding everywhere

Not interested in the ground, blinding electric white arms

poke through the clouds, arc jaggedly back around up to

stab and jab at neighboring cloud bellies repeatedly

We, like the birds, huddle and watch

At the Airport, June 8, 5:45 am

Weather’s storming

         (all over the US)

Tornadoes dropping

         (here and there in Kansas)

Flights cancelling

        (leaving the stranded)

Dad is dying

(liver cancer, 6 to 12 months)

Husband’s crying

(misses me for the week while I visit Dad)

Life’s so trying!

(it all happens at once, doesn’t it?)

The Last Day of My Fifty-Sixth Year

On the morning of May 23, I woke up, exercised, showered, ate, checked emails—the normal stuff

Noticed it had rained heavily during the night

Drove to Dodge City, with my Sweetie, under lowering clouds with rain in all the far distances, the way clear in front of us

Serviced the car; walked the paths inside Wal-Mart—buying Danskin NOW socks; walked the aisles of Hobby Lobby—buying two canvases on sale; ate delicious fish tacos at El Korita—drinking horchata; bought a new mattress set at Ashely’s—dreaming of coil-less sleeping bliss

Arrived at home, relaxed awhile, went to some friends for pizza and a movie

Drove home under more lowering clouds with rain in all the distances, the way clear in front

A great end to another year

A Beautiful Afternoon

Deep baby blue Easter skies with

juicy full white clouds framing and

dappling the flat farmed countryside with

dark shadow splotches, bright sunburst patches like

spotlights searching for actors on a stage and

turning dark blue on the eastern horizon with

every object in high definition while

slashing rain blesses somewhere over there
